Providence: On the heels of Brown University Health’s new announcement that Newport Hospital’s Noreen Stonor Drexel Birthing Center will remain open, advocates will highlight findings of a new white paper during a press conference this Thursday, April 9 at 3:00 pm following a lobby day to educate lawmakers on the importance of maternity care. Despite Brown’s positive announcement, many questions remain about the long-term plan to protect the Center and its services.
The report entitled, “Protecting the Future of Maternity Care in Newport County: How the Noreen Stonor Drexel Birthing Center is Critical to the Health of the Aquidneck Island and East Bay Communities” examines the importance of maintaining maternity services at Newport Hospital within the broader context of maternity unit availability, community health outcomes, and local economic impacts. Report authors include Primary Care for All Americans, SEIU 1199NE, Moms Over Margins, Women's Resource Center, Newport Partnership for Families and the Newport Health Equity Zone - all part of the Coalition for Newport Hospital Birthing Center.
